About Us

Welcome. We are Jenny and Malcolm Crockett and we hope that you will choose to visit us during your time in the beautiful and fascinating Aude.

You can be assured of a warm welcome in Couiza, both from ourselves and the charming and helpful locals. We are sure you will readily appreciate why we picked the ‘Haute Vallee de l’Aude as the preferred destination of choice when we decided on a move to France. It would be fair to say that a Chambre d’Hotes was not in our original plans but upon discovering our new home the house soon suggested such a venture. A decision probably reached by virtue of previous involvement of both of us in the food and hospitality sphere. We hope our efforts in establishing ‘Maison du Pont Vieux’ will provide you with a pleasant and restful stay

We are always available to offer advice and tips on where to visit – sights; restaurants; shops; attractions and activities etc. and provide a selection of leaflets/local guide books etc. for you to consult in order that you can get the very best out of your time here with us.

The landlord of our B&BThis is Maurice. It may well be our names which appear on the Property Deeds but in his eyes 2 Rue du Pont Vieux Couiza is undisputedly HIS home and we are but mere ‘lodgers’.

On our very first visit to view the house in February 2013 Maurice was on the scene; ‘camping out’ actually in one of the garden sheds. On each subsequent visit he was always present, but as with the first encounter he would run off when we approached him. When we moved into our new home in early June 2013 Maurice showed up just after we had gone to bed and spent much of the late evening and night-time calling to us from the garden. The following night curiosity got the better of him and he came indoors to check us out; and has stayed ever since.

We subsequently learned that he was owned by someone who rented the house from it’s previous owner. When he moved to Montazels (about 1km away across the River Aude and the railway line) Maurice was less than pleased and kept making his way back here each time he was re-claimed. His former owner has since made himself known to us and has given Maurice’s transfer into our care his approval.

Maurice is a much-loved part of our household and he has become a lot more trusting and socialised. An aloof disdain is nevertheless his default persona; he is undoubtedly a cat with attitude! As a friend of ours remarked; ‘You’re nobody ‘til you’ve been ignored by a cat’. All that being said Maurice is aware that guest bedrooms are not his domain as much as he might wish it otherwise!
