‘Maison du Pont Vieux’ enjoys an envious due-south-facing location. On the 300+ days of sunshine which the area enjoys each year the attractive garden benefits from day-long sunshine whilst the patio is shaded from the fiercest of summer heat by lush grape vines. The perfect place to take breakfast or an evening meal and to enjoy a glass of wine; particularly ‘Blanquette de Limoux’, the locally produced sparkling wine. On warm summer evenings temperatures allow for sitting outside in light clothes until midnight and later.
We moved here in June 2013 and set about turning a large three storey town house into both our home and a Chambre d’Hotes. The ground floor has been re-configured to provide a large open-plan area. This part of the house is set up in contemporary style with a large modern kitchen; lounge and a dining area which offers an eating space complimentary to dining al fresco on the patio.
The guest rooms on the first floor are reached via an attractive bright stairway either from the garden/living area or directly from the side door facing the road outside. These guest rooms are of generous proportions, this having been accomplished by reducing the original six rooms down to three. Two rooms overlook the garden and hence are south-facing. The third, and largest overlooks Rue du Pont Vieux and benefits from late afternoon/early evening sunshine throughout most of the year.
You can find more including photos highlighting the quintessential French style and chic we have sought to achieve, by going to the ‘Rooms and Rates’ page.
There is parking on both Rue du Pont Vieux and Rue du Parc. Parking is also available very close by in the car park fronting onto the River Aude. Rue du Pont Vieux only carries light local traffic – the ‘Pont Vieux’ itself at the end of the road being of very restricted width. All this helps to provide a quiet, restful but nevertheless convenient location. We are within a minute’s walk of two café/bars each offering food as well as drinks. Three restaurants in Couiza offer lunch and dinner at a range of prices. Other nearby towns and villages offer other dining options and we have compiled an eating out and about guide for your information to which we welcome additions from our guests of their own discoveries.
The house is a minute’s walk from the River Aude and the smaller River Salz is no more than three to four minutes away. Populated by families of ducks and trout of all sizes this river can be crossed by stepping-stones and there are fewer greater pleasures than sitting on one of them whilst dangling one’s feet in the water in early evening following a typically hot summer’s day.
